I also found Michele's standard 10" platform to be too narrow for my dog, who is a Doberman-- largish, maybe, but not large. I may eventually work down to a narrower mat as she becomes more comfortable with them. (Note: She really enjoys the mat work, but we just weren't getting both back feet on reliably, and it was not a pretty pose.) My other dog, a French Bulldog, needed the ten inches, so his purchased mat was also too small, but we were able to use the Doberman's mat for him.
